Geeta Phogat (born December 15th 1988) is an Indian freestyle wrestler who earned the very first gold medal for India in wrestling at the event of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Geeta Phogat’s wrestling career got off to a fantastic start. She is the only first Indian woman to qualify for the Olympic Summer Games in wrestling.

Between the 19th and 21st of December 2009, Phogat won first gold at the event Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in Jalandhar, Punjab.

Commonwealth Games in the year 2010

At the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, Geeta won India’s very first gold medal in women’s wrestling, defeating Emily Bensted of Australia with a score of 1-0, 7-0 in the gold deciding medal match.

Summer Olympics in the year 2012

In April 2012, Phogat clinched a gold medal at the Wrestling FILA Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament in Almaty (a place in Kazakhstan).   She received intensive training at Patiala’s Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS), where she was mentored by O.P. Yadav and a foreign expert coach Ryan Dobo.

In her first fight, Phogat was defeated by Canadian girl Tonya Verbeek with a score of 1–3.  Since the Canadian qualified for the finals, she had one more chance to win. She lost her first round of matches in the qualifying rounds to Lazareva of Ukraine and also lost the bronze medal.

Asian Wrestling Championships in the year 2012

Phogat got defeated with a score of 0-5 against Kanako Murata, a wrestler of Japan, in the initial round of the Asian Wrestling Championships held in 2012. Due to the presence of a Japanese trained fighter in the finals, Phogat was entitled to play in the bronze medal round and win the bronze medal in the 55 kg division, defeating Mongolian Sumiya Erdenechimeg with a score of 3-1.

Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in the year 2013

After losing the final match to Oluwafunmilayo Adeniyi of Nigeria, Phogat came second and earned the silver medal in the category of women’s freestyle for the 59 kg division. Thus the event was arranged in Johannesburg, SA.

World Championships in Wrestling in the year 2012

Phogat grabs up the bronze medal in the year 2012 World Wrestling Championships in the nearby country Canada.

Phogat played Maria Gurova of Russia in the first round and defeated her by a score of 3-1.

She faced a loss by Saori Yoshida of Japan with a score of 0-5 in the second round. With the Japanese martial artist qualifying for the finals, she then competes in the qualifying rounds, first defeating Kazakhstan’s Akziya Dautbayeva with a score of 3-1 and then defeating Ukraine’s Natalya Sinishin by 3-0 in the bronze medal battle.

Asian Wrestling Championships, 2015

Phogat placed third in Doha’s 2015 Asian Wrestling Championships, capturing bronze in the freestyle 58 kg division alongside Kazakhstan’s Aiym Abdildina.

A match was drawn with Japanese Kaori Icho, a 9 x world champion, at the World Championships 2015 in the city of Las Vegas, and she recessed to her in the first round by 0–10. Because Icho qualified for the finals, she had the opportunity to compete in the bronze medal qualifying rounds. Elif Jale Yeşilrmak of Turkey defeated her again by a score of 0–10.
