Pelli Sandadi, directly translated to “wedding euphoria”, was an Indian Telugu Movie released in 1996. Directed by K Raghavendra Rao, the movie found itself in the genre of musical romance. Shot in Konaseema of Andhra Pradesh, the film was made on a budget of Rs. 85 lakhs and grossed up to 15 crores at the box office.

It was a huge success economically. It was also later remade in Hindi as ‘Mere Sapno Ki Raani’ and Tamil as ‘Ninaithen Vandhai’.

Vijay Krishna, a musician who belongs to a musical family, dreams about a girl he believes to be the love of his life. He does not know what she looks like, but he knows that the girl has a mole beside her belly button. While Vijay looks for the girl of his dreams, his father looks for a suitable match for him to marry.

Vijay gets a job in Ooty as a musical instructor. As he works there, he finds Swapna, the girl of her dreams, and he falls in love with her. Meanwhile, back home, his father arranges his marriage with Kalyani, a girl from a nearby village from a musical family.

Vijay proposes to Swapna, and she accepts. However, as he goes home to tell his family about this news, he finds out that his father has already begun arrangements for his marriage with Kalyani. Swapna also learns that Kalyani, who is her sister, is to marry the man she loves. For her sister’s happiness and of Vijay’s future, she informs her sister of a terminal illness that she has.

She also convinces Kalyani to marry Vijay and Vijay to marry Kalyani as her dying wish. However, when Kalyani finds out that Vijay and Swapna are in love, and convinces her to marry him. Pelli Sandadi ends on a positive note, and the characters are assumed to have lived happily ever after.

Cast

  2. Meka Srikant plays Vijay Krishna, the protagonist of the movie.
  3. Deepti Bhatnagar plays Swapna, the other protagonist. Vijay’s love.
  4. Ravali as Kalyani.
  5. Kaikala Satyanarayana is Vijay’s father, and M. Balaiah is Kalyani and Swapna’s father.

Soundtrack

Pelli Sandadi harboured some excellent soundtracks in the film. For instance, K S Chithra and S P Balasubramanyam were the singers for five of these songs in the movie. To clarify, namely, these songs were Hrudayamane, Soundariya Lahari, Kila Kila Kila, Maa Perati Jaam Chettu, and Chemma Chekka.

The above-mentioned songs were written by Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry and Veturi Sundararama Murthy.

In addition to that, the other songs in this movie are Nava Manmadhuda, sung by KS Chitra, and written by Samavedam Shanmukhasarma. Ramya Krishna Laaga was sung by Mano, M. M. Keeravani and written by Jonnavithula. Ayina Chikkaledhu sung  and written by M. M. Keeravani. And Sarigama Padhanisa by S. P. Balasubramanyam and written by Chandrabose.

Reviews

Pelli Sandadi made over 15 crores at the box office and mostly received five stars from its audience.

Reviewers believe that film is entertaining for the whole family to watch. Not only do the Telugu- speaking audience of the movie enjoy the songs, but anyone who has happened to have heard the songs.

The audience appreciates how the directing and the acting bring out all the character’s emotions and the plot. Overall, the target audience received the movie with utmost enthusiasm and emotions.

The film has won a few prestigious awards. For instance, it won a Filmfare award for the best music director. In addition to that, it also won five Nandi Awards.

Pelli Sandadi 2

Pelli Sandadi had a remake of the original movie released in 1996. This remake, or sequel, named Pelli SandaD, was released on 15th October 2021. Gowry Ronanki, under the supervision of  K. Raghavendra Rao, directed this version of the film. Madhavi Kovelamudi, Shobu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni produced this new variation of the original.

K Raghavendra Rao plays Vashishtha, who is a champion basketball player and a Dronacharya awardee. He narrates the story of his childhood love to Rajendra Prasad. The movie cuts to a flashback where Vashishtha (Roshan Meka) falls in love with Shahasra during a wedding.

However, her father does not approve of the pair and decides she should marry her cousin instead. The story shows how they try to convince her father to let her marry Vashishtha.

Reviews

Like the original movie, Pelli SandaD also received quite positive responses. The lead actors gave their best and received the response that they deserved. The soundtracks became extensively popular. However, critics were cynical about the plot. A lot of people thought that it was cliche or unorganised. As a result, Pelli Sandadi 2 only has about 2.5 stars out of five.
