Watching sports films has always been a feast for some people whereas some find it as the same old story of the so-called hero first in a do-or-die situation and then finally beating the so-called villain black and blue. Whether they are sports lovers or haters, all the people love the movie Sarpatta Parambarai.
Pa Ranjith’s Sarpatta Parambarai is a movie that keeps not some but all viewers glued to their screens. Directed by Pa Ranjith, co-produced by him and Shanmugam Dhakshanaraj, the movie revolves around two clans, namely Idiyappa Parambarai and Sarpatta Parambarai, and the boxing rivalry between them.
The movie is in the Tamil language with a running time of 174 minutes and is Pa Ranjith, and Tamizh Prabha have written it. Selva R.K has edited it, and Murali G has cinematographed the masterpiece.
Sarpatta Parambarai Cast:
Arya, who is playing the protagonist, revealed that it was the most challenging role of his career and that he had to undergo seven months of hard training to look like a boxer. Gradually, a reveal of many other characters took place, which included debutant Dushara Vijayan as the male lead’s wife. Anupama Kumar, who has a valiant role to play, describes her character as ‘loud,’ ‘fiery,’ ‘lovable’ and ‘emotional.’

Sarpatta Parambarai Release:
The film had to face a delay from November 2019 because the male actors were undergoing physical training. The shoot had almost begun in March 2020 but again faced a suspension and was finally started in September 2020 and finished in December 2020. North Chennai mostly provided a home for the shooting.
Sarpatta Parambarai, which was about to theatrically, was released on an OTT platform because of the COVID pandemic.
Amazon Prime Video managed to acquire the distribution rights, and the film finally got a release date on the 22nd of July 2021. The film acquired immense praise because of its background setting, which was that of the 1970s and the characters received applause for their remarkable performances. Kalaignar TV acquired the television rights and the film made a total of US$ 4.6 million.
Sarpatta Parambarai Songs:
Santhosh Narayan composed the soundtrack of the movie, which marked his fifth and final film with the director, Pa Ranjith. Santosh chose to make the music synchronize with the era of the 1970s in which the film is set to give the viewers a sense of nostalgia. He brought instruments made of skin which were popular in those days, with the help of some veteran musicians.
Neeyi Oli has been written by Arivu Shan and Shan Vincent De Paul. Santhosh Narayan, Navz-47, and Shan Vincent De Paul have put their efforts in the singing. It spans over 3 minutes and 57 seconds.
Kabilan and Madras Meeran have written Vambula Thambula. Santhosh Narayan, Gana Ulagham Darani, Gana Muthu, and Isaivani sang this beautiful song. Time duration of 5 minutes and 1 second is there.
There is a film version of Neeyi Oli written by Arivu. Santosh Narayan sang it and had a term of 4 minutes and 28 seconds.
Another instrumental song called Dancing Rose spans over 3 minutes 26 seconds.

Sarpatta Parambarai Summary:
Sarpatta Parambarai is set in North Madras in the early 1970s where a Dalit laborer namely Kabilan aspires to become a boxer just like his father, but his mother Bakkiyam doesn’t wish to see her son near the boxing ring. But it’s shown that his passion is supported by his godfather Kevin/Daddy.
After this, the 1975 emergency is declared, and then Rangan manages to host a boxing match between two rival clans, namely Sarpatta and Idiyappam. Sarpatta’s prominent boxer is defeated by Vembuli, a famous one that puts the former in grave tension. After a chain of events, Kabilan finally fights Vembuli in the tournament but unfortunately gets humiliated by some goons, and here the sudden dismissal of the DMK government is also seen.
Kabilan, having difficulty overcoming his past life and serving a jail term after getting into a deadly brawl, slips into alcoholism. Along a long chain of events, the movie finally ends on a positive note, with the Sarpatta clan winning.
Sarpatta Parambarai Review:
Sports films have always been famous for their predictable nature and story. It’s always the protagonist, his struggle, and finally success. Sarpatta Parambarai doesn’t go in a different line, but something about this film distinguishes it from others.
Acclaim:
Pa Ranjith’s sports drama has successfully impressed the viewers, and as it shows the struggles and aspirations of Kabilan(played by Arya), it gradually and simultaneously focuses on the environmental setup of Madras those days which includes the caste system, the societal thinking, and of course the political setup.
Sarpatta Parambarai also doesn’t only focus on one character which is the protagonist but also shows the important dimensions of other characters too. Moreover, Pa Ranjith has actually taken a unique path where Kabilan always aspires to become a boxer but then leaves midway and in the end, again picks up his old passion. Unlike other movies in which we see the protagonist doesn’t have any knowledge about the sport and then some striking event leads them to show a keen interest in that sport, Sarpatta Parambarai has different tastes.
Coming to the cast again, Arya and the other male characters have been indeed portrayed very strong and fierce, but the women which usually are shown subtle are completely the opposite. If we talk about Kabilan’s mother, played by Anupama Kumar, she is a fierce lady who controls the household, and neither Kabilan nor anyone else can dare to challenge her.
Errors:
There are some tinches in the movie wherein the 1970s setup and the movie set up do not match, such as the political setup of the 1970s and the mindset of the people in the film feels a little out of place.
Eventually, Pa Ranjith continues to entertain viewers with his unique style and adds a star to the Tamil Cinema with this enthusiastic sports drama.
The film mostly has got a rating of 3-3.5 from the critics, and the actors and actresses received praise for the efforts they have put in here. The Print set it as an example of how Indian cinema has evolved with anti-caste films.
