Vani Jairam, also known as Vani Jayaram, was born in November 1945 in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India. Her real name was Kalaivani. She was an experienced playback singer in the south Indian film industry. Her music was not only pleasing, but she also had an aura of elegance and fine manners.

Surprisingly, her career was not much like that of other south Indian playback singers. She was a bank employee in Hyderabad. After marriage, she requested a move from Hyderabad to Bombay to be with her husband. Her spouse saw her musical talent and led her to his master, Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan. Her practice usually went around for 18 hours a day, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., as she mentioned in one of her interviews.
